Wake Up And Help The Homeless!
The Pulse First up, Cleveland's Mermaid Police will take... First up, Cleveland's Mermaid Police will take the stage. A duo composed of Jason Dooley and Zac Butler, the pair combine just about every type of indie pop into a sonically beautiful pastiche. With vocals that recall both the Posies and Of Montreal, their lyrics are the stuff of endless collegiate summers and bittersweet romance. The two use electronics as the background for their songs, which exist on the verge between sound collage and pop bliss. Sometimes the music veers toward the realm of clicks and whistles, a la Kompakt, before the guitars swell and explode back into the picture to move the entire enterprise firmly back into the realm of pop. On top of all this, the recordings all have a lo-fi immediacy that recalls the best of the indie rock scene of the late '80s . I imagine this is what Sebadoh would have sounded like if Lou Barlow had eaten a Pixie Stix instead of smoking pot. Very, very cool.

I've been Listening to both Mermaid Police rec... I've been Listening to both Mermaid Police recordings pretty much non-stop and if You have a chance to get copies of these disks at Barking Legs this Friday You will have scored something very rare and very uplifting and You will be glad You did. There's 9 brand new cuts that You can download for free from Mermaid Police's myspace blog but You can see them and two other fine local rock bands perform live Friday night, and get copies of the excellent earlier 10 song Mermaid Police CD to take home for gifts and for yourself. I'm counting these recordings among the best music I've found over the last year and would not want to go without them.
